Introduction

Berlioz and his music inspired many contemporary artists, especially painters and cartoonists. Elsewhere on this site we have created a section which includes a selection of Berlioz cartoons. Here you will find a collection of paintings, lithographs and other works of art. In these genres, the pride of place goes to the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), some of whose works inaugurated this collection.

The idea of paying homage to Berlioz through his paintings came to Fantin-Latour after attending a performance of Roméo et Juliette on 5 December 1875. His first project, which was realised first as a sketch, then a lithograph and finally a painting, was entitled L’Anniversaire. Souvenir du 5 décembre 1875 [The Anniversary. Memories of the 5th December 1875].

Later he created 14 lithographs specifically for the monumental biography of Berlioz that his distinguished friend Adolph Jullien published in 1888: Hector Berlioz, sa vie et ses œuvres (Paris, Librarie de l’art), with initially 30 copies of the print run. The subjects of these lithographs were various works of Berlioz. Fantin-Latour created other paintings and lithographs with Berlioz’s musical output as their subject.

Here we present the 14 lithographs which first appeared in Jullien’s book. Our friend Gene Halaburt has kindly scanned them from his own 1888 edition of the book and generously offered them for presentation on this site. We are most grateful to him for sharing these beautiful lithographs with Berlioz admirers around the world.

Jullien’s book also contains a number of lithographs by other 19th century artists who were inspired by Berlioz’s music. These have been scanned from our own copy of the book and presented here.

Marc Chagall’s famous painting on the ceiling of the Opéra Garnier in Paris (known as Chagall’s Ceiling) was inspired by nine musical works: Mozart’s Magic Flute, Berlioz’s dramatic symphony Roméo et Juliette, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisandre, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Stravinsky’s Fire Bird, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Adam’s Giselle and Moussorgsky’s Boris Godounov. We have included on this page three images of the painting.

Also included in these pages are works by Henri Ding, Maurice Utrillo and Haydn Greenway.
