    The engraving on the cover of the above book shows Harriet Smithson in the role of Ophelia at the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris where Berlioz first saw Harriet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (as Juliet) and Hamlet (as Ophelia).

    Berlioz’s love for and marriage to Harriet Smithson inspired Frank W Kenyon to write his novel Passionate Rebel, published in 1972 by Dodd, Mead & Company, New York.
    The design of the book’s jacket, reproduced here, is by Biro. The building in the background is the Théâtre de l’Odéon.
