Cancelled edition
As appears from notes in a copy of the 1854 edition in the Albi Rosenthal collection at Oxford, a new edition was projected in 1862. For that purpose Berlioz brought his list of works at the end of the volume up to date. However, this edition has not been published. Only in 1871, after Berlioz’s death, a new edition was published, although without list of works (see above)

idiomatic English rendering of the original text rather than a literal
word-for-word translation. Some turns of phrase from Roche’s translation have been preserved. Barzun seems not to have been aware of the fact that two
important passages from the original edition have been deleted in the 1854
edition. Nowhere he mentions these passages in this annotated edition; he even
