Academic interests:

My research interest is in cross-cultural studies of organisations and management styles. I have conducted various projects involving organisations in Asia, Europe and the United States.

I studied and worked at the following universities:
Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Tehran [Terhan Business School], (BA, Business Studies)
University of  Oxford (M Litt, thesis entitled Cultural Determinants of Organizational Response to Environmental Demands)
University of Aston in Birmingham (PhD, thesis entitled Nations and Organisations)
University of Sussex (post-doctoral research fellow, research project on leadership style and national culture)
Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, senior academic until my early retirement in 2005)
Edinburgh Business School (faculty member and author of postgraduate distance learning programme course books since 1989)

A few years ago I conducted a major research project involving HRM policies and practices of a large sample of foreign and UK-owned companies located in Scotland. The data were collected through extensive interviews with senior, middle and junior managers.

The main hypotheses and arguments underlying the project, and its research design and findings as interpreted are found in the following publications:

Tayeb, M. H., 2000, The Management of International Enterprises: A Socio-Political View. Basingstoke: Macmillan.

Tayeb, M. H., 2001, ‘Conducting Research Across Cultures - Overcoming Drawbacks and Obstacles’,  International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management, vol. 1, no. 1., pp. 113-129.

Tayeb, M. H, 2003, ‘HRM in the "Global Village": cultural impediments and practical complications’, keynote speech given at the 7th Conference on International HRM, Limerick, Ireland, 4-6 June. (to appear in a book containing a selection of the conference papers)

Tayeb, M. H, 2005, International Human Resource Management: A Multinational Company Perspective. Oxford University Press.

You may find the full list of my major publications and conference papers further down the page.

Non-academic interests:

My non-academic interests include wildlife, travel, reading, gardening and surfing the Internet. I particularly enjoy listening to classical music and going to concerts and operas. My favourite composer is Hector Berlioz, to whom I have dedicated a website, co-authored with my husband. I also love Mozart's and Beethoven's music and selected works of many other 18th, 19th and 20th centuries composers.

In 1997, I completed a three-year diploma course in French with the Open University so as to be able to read French books and articles, including Berlioz's Les Soirées de l’Orchestre, Les Grotesques de la Musique, À Travers Chants, Mémoires and his letters published in 8 volumes, in Correspondance Générale.
