The Journal contained cartoons, drawn by Grévin, related to the
last three acts of Berlioz’s epic opera Les Troyens (Les Troyens à
Carthage), the only part of the opera performed in the composer’s lifetime
–
there were altogether 21 performances at the Théâtre Lyrique in
Paris in November
and December 1863. See also: The

The venerable old rhapsode

For the 1863 performance of Les Troyens à Carthage Berlioz prefaced the opera with an introduction declaimed by a rhapsode in ancient dress; his function was to tell the audience the story of the first two acts (La prise de Troie) which were not performed in 1863.
