Paris in the early 19th century

This page is also available in French

As mentioned in the main Berlioz in Paris page, the appearance of France’s capital city has constantly changed over the years. The two engravings below, both from our own collection, give two general views of Paris which are probably close to what Berlioz must have seen on his arrival in 1821.

Paris in 1816

(Large view)

The above engravings was published by Thomas Kelly, Paternoster Row, London in December 1816.

Paris in 1820

(Large view)

The above engraving was made by Berkowetz after Steigmeyer.
